ECHO Generic Masthead 500X279
December 2009

Issue No. 31

It is with mixed emotions that we send out this month’s ECHO in which we share with you the exciting stories of two of our successful youth-based education programs. The Garrett County Explorers and the Wyoming County Green Team projects demonstrate the power of teachers and students in creating a more sustainable future.

However, it is with great sadness and heavy hearts that we report on the death of a dear friend of CVI, Gary Yoder. Gary worked with the Maryland Department of Natural Resources and partnered with CVI on many projects. It was Gary’s vision that helped create the Crellin Corps of Discovery, the model used to develop the Garrett County Explorers. For his vision, dedication to natural resources, and larger-than-life sense of humor, we dedicate this issue of the ECHO to Gary.

If you have questions or comments about the ECHO, contact Vicki Fenwick-Judy at vicki.fenwick@canaanvi.org or 1-800-922-3601 ext. 257. To signup for our electronic ECHO click here.

Garrett County Explorers Program

In Garrett County, Maryland, the school bell rings between 2:15 and 3:00 and the school day is officially over—but not for the Explorers students at four pilot schools. On any given day, the students that participate in the afterschool environmental education club are busy investigating, collecting data, and brainstorming about environmental concerns in their school and neighborhoods.

The Sun is Shining in Wyoming County

The sun is shining in Wyoming County, West Virginia--at least we hope it will be. The sun will help Wyoming County Schools (WCS) further the success of their energy management program and save the schools even more money. Canaan Valley Institute recently received $45,000 from the Appalachian Regional Commission’s Energy Efficiency and Renewable Energy for Schools program. This money will be used to develop a renewable energy education class at the WCS Career and Technical Center.
