Issue No. 30

Canaan Valley Institute envisions every community having access to clean water. By providing outreach and technical assistance we help communities address serious water quality problems. In this issue, you will read how one rural West Virginia community is addressing severe flooding and sedimentation in their watershed.

Restoring Knapps Creek
Pocahontas County's Knapps Creek is one of many West Virginia watersheds that have been heavily impacted by the combination of destabilizing land use practices and severe flood events. Happily, it is also on the growing list of streams that are receiving restoration efforts from the collaboration of private and government resources.

Sustainable Wastewater Treatment at CVI's New Research and Education Center
When you flush the toilets at the new Canaan Valley Institute (CVI) Research and Education Center we don't want your experience to be out of sight out of mind. The two systems installed in the building are a combination of the old and new. Both of these wastewater treatment techniques help to lower the overall water consumption in the building as well as demonstrate an effective way to treat wastewater without chemicals, without high energy costs, and without industrial processes.

Wastewater Workshop – Installation of Low Pressure Pipe Systems

When: November 18, 2009
Where: CVI’s Research & Education Center, Davis, WV
Cost:  $75.00

Join instructors Mark Whitaker, CVI, and Rick Hertges, West Virginia Bureau of Public Health, as they discuss low pressure pipe (LPP) systems. LPPs provide a viable alternative to the conventional septic tank soil absorption system. Surface discharge systems such as home aeration units are continually being ever more scrutinized for installation by regulators as a solution to onsite problems. Alternative systems that employ the subsurface discharge concept are looked upon much more favorably as possible ways to eliminate sewage system failures.
