About Us Community Assistance Education
Highlands Action Program News

Canaan Valley Institute (CVI) empowers local citizens to create healthy communities and clean watersheds. By providing education, outreach, and technical assistance, we help communities gain the tools and skills necessary to develop lasting solutions.

We envision every community having access to clean water. Healthy streams and watersheds are vital for communities to thrive—today and for future generations. Clean water is important for drinking, industries, recreation, and aesthetics, but water can also tell the story of the overall health of a community. Poor water quality can be an indicator of other socioeconomic challenges in healthcare, education, and economic development. Communities that lack vital systems such as water and wastewater infrastructure have little chance of thriving. It's not something most people think about, but if you live in a community where access to clean water isn't a given, there is nothing more important.

CVI's greatest asset is our staff: a dedicated and diverse group of individuals in four states who firmly believe that local people can make a difference in solving their communities' concerns. Our technology is cutting edge, our expertise unparalleled and accessible, and our commitment 100 percent. The Institute is structured for integrated problem solving and implementation, as project teams draw on staff and resources from three divisions: Science & TechnologyStakeholder Services & Assessment , and Finance & Operations .

CVI is gathering information about operation and maintenance costs for non-traditional (sometimes called alternative or decentralized) wastewater treatment systems servicing small communities with less than 5,000 residents. The goal is to create a database which provides accurate information to managers, decision makers, and residents about the performance and costs of operation for wastewater treatment options in small communities.
