The Second Annual West Virginia Floodplain Managers Conference, Planning Our Safe Future, was held at Canaan Valley Institute on May 12-14, 2010. This meeting was organized to build the organization, offer relevant training to its membership, and provide networking opportunities among members. The mission, vision, and bylaws of the West Virginia Chapter of the Association of State Floodplain Managers were accepted and officers and directors for the coming year were elected.

This conference, jointly sponsored by the Environmental Research Center at West Virginia University and Canaan Valley Institute was held March 7-9, 2010, at CVI's Research and Education Center near Davis, WV. The focus of the conference was the identification of research to help researchers, policy makers, and stakeholders better understand the connection between uplands and coastal areas, including the environmental stresses in the Highlands that result from the considerable ecosystem services that the Highlands provide to downstream communities.

The US Army Corps of Engineers released new rules for mitigation banking in April 2008. CVI partnered with WV Department of Environmental Protection, industry leaders, and other agencies to host a workshop which focused on the new rules and basic concepts behind mitigation banking, the preferred method of compensatory mitigation. The workshop was held October 1, 2008 in Gilbert, West Virginia

Canaan Valley Institute's Executive Director, Kiena Smith, welcomed nearly 200 people to the groundbreaking for CVI's Research and Education Center on April 19, 2008. Speakers included Congressman Alan B. Mollohan, along with officials from the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA), the National Youth Science Foundation (NYSF), and West Virginia University (WVU).

The 2007 Mid-Atlantic Stream Restoration Conference was held November 6-8, 2007, at Rocky Gap State Park in Cumberland, Maryland. This three day event brought together nearly 400 professionals in the field of stream restoration. Engineers, scientists, and hands-on practitioners shared their research findings, case studies, and lessons learned in the developing field of stream restoration. The conference was concluded with a panel discussion which explored the differing ideas on the science, engineering, and policy of stream restoration. Members of the panel included Will Harman, Richard Hey, Matt Kondolf, Dave Rosgen, Andrew Simon, and Peter Wilcock.

Over 600 years of combined research and investigations of the Canaan Valley area culminated in the CVI-sponsored Canaan Valley
& Its Environs: A Landscape Heritage Celebration that took place at Canaan Valley State Park between October 16 and 19, 2002. A technical symposium, along with a weekend public forum, field trips, and entertainment drew hundreds of people to the event.

West Virginia has experienced significant damage and suffered severe losses from flooding in the past. Improving the understanding of the causes of flooding and working toward development of better floodplain management will lessen and mitigate these losses. Floodplain managers from across the state met on April 21, 2009, in Harrison County to take the first steps in organizing a chapter of the Association of State Floodplain Managers (ASFPM).
