Canaan Valley Institute Encourages Public Use of Its Property

In December 2002, Canaan Valley Institute purchased 3,208 acres from Allegheny Energy. Since that time CVI has added 15 additional acres. Located near Davis in Tucker County, West Virginia, the property includes a portion of the northern face of Canaan Mountain bordered roughly by State Route 32 to the west and the Canaan Valley watershed along the ridge of Canaan Mountain.  The Blackwater River runs through CVI property for about 2.5 miles, closely paralleling the Camp 70 Road (Delta Road 13). About 740 acres of the property lies north of the Blackwater River and is bordered by Beaver Creek and State Route 93. Property boundaries are marked with Canaan Valley Institute signs.

The Camp 70 Road and State Routes 32 and 93 provide the primary access to the property. Off-road motorized vehicular travel is allowed on the Camp 70 road but is prohibited on CVI property. CVI's property remains open to the public for hiking, mountain biking, hunting, fishing, camping, cross-country skiing, snowshoeing and other non-motorized outdoor recreation. Hunting and fishing are in accordance with West Virginia state regulations. Trout stocking is performed in spring and fall by West Virginia Division of Natural Resources.

The West Virginia Division of Highways is responsible for maintenance of the Camp 70 Road. However, no snow removal will be provided during winter months.

New Hunting Restrictions-Effective Fall 2009

New hunting restrictions have been implemented with the opening of CVI’s Research and Education Center. The area marked on CVI maps, posted in the kiosks, on the website, and in brochures as the construction or restricted area will also become the safety zone around the building complex. West Virginia hunting regulations set the safety zone at 500 feet from an occupied building. The area will be posted with signs and hunters are asked to remain outside the posted area.

HUNTERS MAY PASS THROUGH THIS AREA WITH UNLOADED FIREARMS ON ESTABLISHED TRAILS ONLY

Please be respectful of this safety zone to preserve the future of hunting on the property.
